Pinterest

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pinterest is a web and mobile application company that operates a software system designed to discover information on the World Wide Web, mainly using images and on a shorter scale, GIFs and videos. Pinterest has reached 200 million monthly active users as of September 2017.

Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann summarized the company as a "catalogue of ideas" that inspires users to "go out and do that thing", rather than as an image-based social network.

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is where people discover new ideas and find inspiration to do the things they love!

Pins are ideas that help you get creative or try something new, whether you're planning a camping trip or collecting home improvement hacks.

Pins are saved to boards, keeping your ideas organized and easy to find. Follow other people or boards that are saving ideas you're interested in, so you can do even more of what you love.

What Are Pins?

Pins are ideas people find and save from around the web.

Each Pin links back to the website it was saved from.  If you click through the Pin you can learn more about it - like how to make it or where to buy it.

The Save Button

The Save button does exactly that - it saves your ideas and Pins!

As you discover Pins you're interested in, save them to your boards by clicking on the red Save button.

Bring Your Ideas To Life

When you see a Pin that you've always wanted to try, do it!   And share how it went by adding a photo or note.

Send Pins To Other People

It's easy to share ideas with other people. By sending Pins to your friends, you can turn a camping trip into a camping party!

Boards

Save Pins to boards to easily organize your ideas.

The Pins you save live in the boards you create. Name your boards whatever you want and arrange them in any order you like. Oh!  Did I mention that you can add other people to your boards?  Friends who save Pins together, stay together!

Board Sections

Sections are boards within boards and they make your ideas even easier to find and organize. If you have a furniture board imagine creating sections that organize your ideas to different color, size, or occasion - there are no rules, so get inspired to create!

Secret Boards

We won't tell if you won't!

Secret boards are perfect for planning surprises or collecting gift ideas. Only you (and anyone you add to the secret board) can see the Pins saved.

Home Feed

Your home feed shows the Pins saved by the people, topics and boards you choose to follow. Pinterest will also sometimes show you Pins inspired by your boards or recent activity to help you find ideas you might like.

Your home feed is your space. Build it as you like by following anyone who's saving ideas you love or would like to try.

Following

Follow topics, people and boards you're passionate about to personalize your home feed.

When you follow something, their Pins make up the majority of your home feed so be sure to follow what you love or people who inspire you.

Find What You Love And Explore Ideas You Might Like

Ideas from all over the web are saved to Pinterest and they're waiting to be discovered!

Explore new ideas by searching for Pins, people, or boards. Pinterest will guide your search by showing different keywords to add to your search, making discovering ideas easy to do.

You can also point your camera and take a photo of anything, from cars to art, for a visual search, and Pinterest will show you different ideas related to the image-giving you endless possibilities!

To find even more of what you love, check out your home feed to see what the people you're following are saving.

Your Profile

From the boards you create to everything you're following, your profile is who you are and the ideas you love.

In your profile, you can find all the Pins you save, boards you create and Pins you try. You can also find who's following you and everyone you're following, including boards and topics. Anyone can see your profile, but your secret boards will stay hidden.

When you create an account, Pinterest will make a username for you, but personalize your profile by updating your username, adding a photo and creating a bio.

As a business, you can engage with millions of people who use Pinterest every day to discover, save and do things that inspire them. Using Pinterest helps you reach new customers, drive traffic back to your website and more.

As a business, it's important to build up your Pinterest presence so people can discover and save your content.

Here's how to add Pins to your profile:
Create boards for your business

Think about a few relevant topics that your target audience may want to see and create boards that line up with those interests. For example, if you run a local sporting goods shop, you could Pin products, local hikes, camping tips and inspirational photography (make sure to add a category to your board to help people find them).

Save Pins from your site

To easily save Pins from the web (including your own site), add the Pinterest browser button.  After installing, you'll see a Save button any time you mouse over an image.  Or, click the red P at the top of your browser whenever you find something on the web you want to save.  All Pins that are saved with this button will automatically link back to the site it came from.

Include other Pins from Pinterest

It's a good idea to mix up your own content with other things on Pinterest to make your profile more well-rounded and compelling.  For example, Starbucks fills its Pinterest boards with a blend of Pins from their website and Pins found on Pinterest.

Upload new Pins

If you want to create a new Pin, you can upload a photo by clicking the + button to the right of search.  After uploading your image, edit your new Pin to make sure it links back to a website where people can learn more about your business.

Business Best Practices

Add the Save button

When the Save button is front and centre on your website, people are more likely to share your stuff on Pinterest. This means more traffic for you and more people discovering your content.

Once someone saves something from your website, their followers will see the Pin and can click through to get back to your site. Other Pinners can also find these Pins in search results or categories.

Get to know your analytics

Pinterest Analytics helps you understand how people are interacting with your Pins and your website.   You can use this information to tailor what you share on Pinterest, on your website or even in your store.

NOTE:  If you're not seeing data in analytics, you don't have any Pins from your website yet.

Grow your followers

You can help people discover your business by:

  1. Saving regularly to your account - that way, more Pins will appear in your followers' feeds and in search

  2. Adding a Follow button on your website and in your newsletter

  3. Following other people and saving Pins that relate to your business
Tell your company's story

Use your own Pinterest profile to showcase what inspires your brand or share your products with Pinners.

You can even invite people to any of your boards. S ome of the best business boards have a mix of Pins from their own site and others that inspire their company.

Drive traffic to your website

When people discover your Pins, they can click through to visit your website.

Here are a few ways to boost that traffic:

  1. Enable Rich Pins for your site - Rich Pins have more information than regular Pins which encourages people to click through

  2. Add the Save button to make it easier for people to Pin from your website
  3. Promote your Pins - The Pinterest Ads Manager helps you create Promoted Pins.  Promoted Pins are regular Pins that you can pay for so that more of your desired audience sees them in relevant search results, category feeds and home feed.
